Croquet

Distressed stretches of space and time.
Earworms on the spectrum.
Manifestation of memories.
Dreamy recollection of lip syncs that questioned the binary.
MIDI jingles to play croquet to.
Distant cries for progress in a modern world.
A map of growing up and living with acute, mostly functional, mental illness.

B o y s - a track celebrating the exploration of sexuality in the basement laundromat of a Section 8 apartment building. I was in a group of 4 children that would explore each other without the bias of gender. Probably my first bisexual exploration. We danced up the cold concrete stares after playing with each other while singing this song. Or at least that’s how I remember it.

C a l l i n g - mesmerized by dreams of the future in the sea of commerce. Memories of shopping as a child, wondering what the track was and getting the hook trapped in the head.

C r o q u e t - being obsessed by making music when young my mother bought me a Yamaha SHS-10 keytar. It had a midi version of Last Christmas programmed into it. I lived in an untraditional family at the time that consisted of my Mom, her Girlfriend, her Girlfriend’s son and myself. We would play croquet in the yard during the summer and I would bring out the keytar and play with it between rounds. I would play the demo on loop sometimes and we would call it ‘croquet music’.

D o m i n a t i o n - a young child’s obsession with the life of a ninja. Canon films gifted us some amazing visual and auditory delights.

G l a m - could not not escape this track when shopping at a mall. It evokes memories of traveling to the good mall that was a city over from where I lived. I now work at that mall. This won’t be the only appearance of a track written by Androgyny.

H e a r t - another mall song that engulfed me with it’s amazing hooks. A song that I felt like I had always known, even before I heard it. I call it DNA music. I have a lot of it.

J a m - my grandmother had a church PA system stored at her house when I was growing up. Me and my cousin would lip sync this song with the microphones. It was when I started giving a fuck all regarding gender norms and starting questioning the absurdity of the binary. I really enjoyed singing the female vocals.

M a g i c - More love of the martial art movies.Atrack that would get trapped in my mind from the movie I have probably seen the most in my life.

F r e e - I had an AM/FM clock radio and one morning this was the song that woke me up. It was the first inspiring ear worm that inspired me to ask for a cassette player and this cassette for my birthday. My first independent choice of selecting my own music to buy. I still have the cassette.

C r u s h - another mall song and another lip sync song. Singing and dancing and feeling joy in my youth. Carefree and not feeling shame.

N o R e t u r n - yet another mall and lip sync song. Though, I have to mention here that my cousin that I would sing and dance with ended up introducing me to cannabis. We also played with other psychedelia. I am thankful for that, but he went down the harder road of meth and hard pain killers. I distanced myself from him at that point and we drifted far apart. I often regret not being a better influence, but I preferred the path of self enlightenment and exploration while he was just running from pain.

O n M e - another appearance of a track written by the purple one. A little secret: I think I prefer songs he wrote more than songs he performed. This takes me back to the Nightmare on Elm Street series and my deep love of horror soundtracks.

S u n s h i n e - This one is tricky. While it is a song that was always on at the mall and television ads, my first memory of it feel like a possible false memory. It seems that it initially got trapped in my head when I went to see The Secret of My Success at the drive-in with my family, though since it isn’t listed on the official soundtrack and I haven’t seen the movies in decades it could entirely be a false memory.

T i m e - More so than the movie itself, which I have seen an uncountable number of times, I recall the SNL episode of the Fox where he was in an elevator with people who would recognize him and sing ‘gonna go back in time’ over and over in loops. It awakened me to the power of the earworm and how many of us just get these isolated hooks caught in our head, often spilling over to the collective (un) consciousness.

Z o o m i n g - For some reason the hook would just get trapped in my head. Even now, randomly it just pops up in my head. No reason. No provocation. It just does.

W o r k F o r c e - Where I work there are about 20 tracks on constant loop. This is one of them.

D e l F r i s c o ‘ s - This was a full on field recording capture from the hotel lobby of my most recent business trip. The lobby was just a few hundred feet from a Del Frisco’s Restaurant so the audio recording automatically titled it that location. Not only did I find the name kind of charming, but it holds a little nostalgic element that only existed as a referential thought.

I was a young line cook with very little experience and I was working a salad station beside a seasoned grill cook. He handed me down life lessons regarding getting free stuff from corporations (write, complain and rotate monthly - hey, it worked in the 90s), but he also mentioned working for an upscale, fancy steak house called Del Frisco’s. Only a few months ago did I get to see one of these establishments. I did not go in, as I am a vegetarian and had little practical purpose in visiting a very expensive steakhouse alone, but I was unimpressed with the location being in a drab 90s looking strip mall. Though it did give me a beautiful geotagged title as a gift.
